27Jun – Departure Day

Our travel route takes us from Cleveland through Newark, NJ and on to Berlin.

Fun footnote
We must be learning how to pack…finally. For this two-week trip, my suitcase came in at a very comfortable 38.5 lbs. And Rob did me a half-pound better at 38.0 lbs. Of course, I can’t shake that nagging feeling that I somehow forgot something important…something that I will only discover when it is too late. (Pop a Xanax!)

The inevitable snafu
Verizon’s systems are down…and have been for at least 24 hours. I was advised to wait until our billing period ended — which should have been on June 25th — before setting up a data plan for Europe.  Not only can they not help set up a data plan—but they can’t even check billing dates, accept payments, etc. I have that sinking feeling that something is going to go tragically (and expensively) wrong once I tap into the data service in Germany.

The present
In New Jersey, we sit opposite each other at one of the Newark United Club’s tall-tops, drinking complimentary wine, each lost in our technology waiting for our trans-Atlantic metal tube of transportation to carry us to the Fourth Reich.
